The leader of one of the state’s most successful inner-city schools is touting a plan to help struggling Oklahoma City school district students catch-up academically.
Tracy McDaniel says hundreds of district students who are repeating the third-grade can’t pass a state-mandated reading test because they can’t comprehend what they’re reading.
“It tells me that we’re out of alignment with our curriculum instruction,” said McDaniel, the longtime principal of KIPP Reach College Preparatory, a public charter middle school on the city’s northeast side. “It’s not just an Oklahoma City problem; it’s a state problem.”
